TRADITIONAL APPLE SAUCE

– FORGOTTEN FOOD FOR HEALING THE GUT

Oh, my apple sauce! Do you have an abundance of apples this fall? That’s fantastic news!

Did you know that stewed apples were used for thousands of years to help with digestion?

If you are trying to heal the gut (let’s face it – the importance of healthy gut and microbiome stands at the very forefront of literally every imbalance in the body), the home-made sugar-free apple sauce offers a very gentle, warming and soothing treat.

A bowl of warm apple sauce is wonderfully satisfying and it will definitely soften and sweeten your mood.

The other day, my sweetheart brought two huge bags of apples from a nearby farm. The first question that came to my mind was ‘where are we going to store them to make them last as long as possible?’

Then I had a deeper thought that brought me back to my childhood and the lightbulb in my head switched on! Let’s make APPLE SAUCE! I’ve always loved the apple sauce, and as I remember, back in my country the apple sauce was very popular, especially during the winter season. It was always also a well popular food for babies.

Back in times, we used sugar to preserve this delicious delight, and that’s one ingredient I surely wanted to avoid.

So after a bit of research, I came up with a simple recipe with no sugar, instead, I added spices like cinnamon, nutmeg, and cloves, and the result was an absolutely delicious warming apple sauce that instantly brought me back to the childhood!

By adding a bit of warming ghee (from traditional Ayurveda), you will do a favour to your nerves by providing a soothing and smoothing effect.

A warming bowl of apple sauce makes a perfect snack at any time of the day, and will surely satisfy the craving for sweets.

Cooked apples are a wonderful fall treat (warm soup-like treat), that is easy to digest. When you feel like you desire something sweet, I bet once you will try to make the apple sauce, you will never look back!

Warming apple sauce with cinnamon and optional ghee also makes a very satisfying and comforting treat when you feel stressed. And considering there is no sugar added, you can indulge without thinking of any extra pounds added!

Apple sauce makes also an excellent late dinner snack, that will help you to balance your blood sugar levels. Maintaining steady blood sugar levels is extremely important when you are trying to get those hormones balanced. Hello ladies 🙂

  • helps to heal the leaky gut – pectin (a special type of fibre inside the apples) is known to be an easily accessible fuel that your gut cells can instantly use and regenerate (source)
  • keeps you regular – a great source of fibre
  • refreshes your kidneys and adrenals, and restores the feeling of ‘juiciness’
  • gentle liver support – malic acid in apples helps to cleanse the liver
  • steady blood sugar

Sometimes I like to add the apple sauce to my warm porridge, let it be made with gluten-free oats, quinoa, or chia seeds (image above). In our family, we use home-made almond milk – find the recipe HERE. Top it up with a teaspoon of cacao nibs, a few walnuts or pecans and call it a day!

Add this delicious apple sauce to your gut-healing protocol, so your body can thank you!
